WAABI Wednesday - 9-30-09

Hello to all my colleagues! This is my very first WAABI Wednesday since stepping up from being merely a great WAABI fan to becoming your national Membership Chair. Many of you have done so much more than I for this organization. Many of you have been giving up your extra time after work to ensure that our industry remains as vital as you can make it. And you’ve done this for years. And you don’t seem to be ready to quit. That’s commitment! That’s what drives teams to achieve more together than they could ever achieve as individual, albeit-talented players.

So I have accepted the challenge to help recruit some relief for those who have toiled without a break for so long. Let’s be realistic, the reinforcements may not come immediately, and not without a lot of extra effort. In fact, unless we are able to excite others to feel the same desire that you’ve had, WAABI could fade into history. So we need new ideas. We need an updated communication campaign. Are social networking web sites like LinkedIn, FaceBook and others the right way to spread the message? Do we have colleagues that you know of who have volunteered for other projects that need to hear our story? I’d love to hear your ideas!

I propose that an e-mail be sent to whomever in our respective organizations and affiliates can authorize a blast to all employees of our corporate allies. Our brochure can be compressed to bullet points, outlining what WAABI does for everyone’s security and welfare. Then, once we get the permission, we can send the word very widely to all corners of the industry, hopefully finding enough interested parties to open new chapters and augment existing ones. What is the best and most efficient way to do that?

I certainly don’t have all the answers, but if we can all brain dump, share what sounds good, and make some builds; we may find those new friends to expand our numbers and effectiveness. And that will cause even further growth because everyone wants to enjoy a party and be part of a winning team. We need to identify and remove obstacles to membership and define the sort of benefits that will make all our colleagues eager to be “card carrying members” of the WAABI movement!

Your National Membership Committee, Tobin Thomas, Peg Donovan, Stephanie Flannery, Duncan Cameron and myself are all waiting to hear whatever you want to suggest.

WAABI Wednesday - 9-20-09

Hello everyone! This is my very first WAABI Wednesday as the newly elected President of the Metro DC Chapter. With all the legislation issues in the Congress, things have been hopping in the Nation's Capital. That being said, there have not been many chances for WAABI meetings or outings.

DC WAABI held Our 23rd Annual Golf Tournament on June 30 at the National Golf Club at Tantallon in Maryland. We had 60 golfers and netted approximately $10,000 for the Chapter. A special thank you to the member companies who sponsored holes, foursomes and donated items for the gift bags. DIAGO again sponsored the $ 100,000 hole-in-one contest. Although many tried, no one won! Our core group of volunteers did a fantastic job of putting the event together – Thank you!!

With the money raised, we will again be able to donate generously to our local charities, the SEED Foundation and House of Ruth. We will also be able to donate to Sky Ranch, as we have done for over 20 years!

I would also like to take this time to thank Christine LoCascio for her willingness in taking the reins of our Chapter when our former President resigned last year. Our Chapter officers, John Bodnovich, Vice President, Rob Schwarz, Treasurer; and Emily Burk, Sky Ranch Chair, have all gone above and beyond in serving the organization well. And, of course, our own Duncan Cameron, the new Executive Director of National WAABI. Duncan we could not do all we do without you and Young! We're really proud that John was named to the National WAABI Board recently as Legislative Chairman! I've attached his first report! If you can't open a PDF file, we can send a word document. I am looking forward to an outstanding year and getting down to the business of inviting more people to get involved in the Metro DC Chapter of this wonderful organization.

Cheers,
Barbara
